Marriott Bonvoy members can buy up 100,000 points (pre-bonus) annually. In addition, members can purchase up to 100,000 points annually (on top of the usual cap, pre-bonus) when making an award reservation but do not get any bonus during this sale. We purchased 80,000 points earlier this year which is why we can only purchase another 20,000 points at this point.

Marriott Bonvoy Points Sale History During The Past Year

Illustrative examples of situations when Marriot Bonvoy points are worth buying

If you have an upcoming stay at a Marriott property where the cash rates during your intended period of stay are high, it is worth taking a look at the reward night prices and do the maths to find out if there will be any savings from buying points during a points sale.

Using one of the most aspirational Marriott properties, The Gritti Palace, a Luxury Collection Hotel, Venice as an example:

As shown above, the lowest rate costs a total of approximately USD 2,960 (taxes inclusive) for a 2-night stay in a deluxe guest room. If you were to purchase points at USD 0.0083 per point instead (rate of current Marriott Bonvoy points sale) for a reward night during the same period; at a total of 176,000 points for two nights, your total cost would be USD 20 + (176,000 X 0.0083) = USD 1,480.8 instead which represents a significant savings of USD 1,479 (50% savings)!

Using Mandapa, a Ritz-Carlton Reserve as another example to illustrate further:

The cheapest available rate for a 2-night stay over the selected period is the flexible rate with breakfast, which costs a total of approximately USD 1,907. At a total rate of 188,000 points for two nights, a reward night funded by points costing USD 0.0083 each (rate of current Marriott Bonvoy points sale) would cost a total of USD 1,560.40, a savings of USD 346.60 (18.2% savings) over two nights!

Conclusion

The 50% bonus points offered during this points sale is not the best from Marriott Bonvoy. If there are no immediate plans to secure an award reservation at an expensive property, it would be advisable to skip this offer.

As always, you should not buy points speculatively without an award redemption in mind as the cost of Marriott Bonvoy’s reward night is based on dynamic pricing and can increase at any time without notice. Marriott Bonvoy has point sales every couple of months so there is no need to stock up on points in advance.
