Hilton Honors Points Sale History

Illustrative examples of situations when Hilton Honors points are worth buying

If you have an upcoming stay at a Hilton property where the cash rates during your intended period of stay are high, it is always worth taking some time to look at the award calendar and do the math to find out if buying Hilton Honors points during a sale for an award stay would lead to any savings.

Since our focus is on luxury hotels, let us use an aspirational Hilton property, the Conrad Maldives as an example:

As shown above, the flexible rate including breakfast with Hilton discount (not the cheapest rate) costs a total of USD 4,039.91 for a 3-night stay in a Sunrise Water Villa. If you were to purchase points at USD 0.005 per point instead for an award stay during the same period; at 120,000 points per night, your total cost would be (120,000 X 3 X 0.005) USD 1,800 instead which represents a whopping USD 2,239.91 (55.4% savings) worth of savings!

Let’s use another example to illustrate, this time the Waldorf Astoria Beverly Hills:

For a 2-night stay, the cheapest available rate over the selected period is the Hilton discount non-refundable rate, which costs a total of USD 2,405.99. At a rate of 120,000 points a night, an award stay funded by points costing USD 0.005 each would cost a total of USD 1,200, a savings of USD 1,205.99 (50.12% savings) over two nights.

In addition to the huge savings in this case, you are also getting more flexibility with an award stay as compared to the non-refundable rate as award stays are usually cancellable up to a certain time whereas the non-refundable rate booking is not, making the award booking the superior option.

Conclusion

The current 100% bonus points promotion is the best offer by Hilton Honors for its points sale. If you have plans to stay at an expensive Hilton property, it is worth taking some time to do the math to find out if it is worth buying points during this promotion.

One point to note is that you should not buy points speculatively, without an award redemption in mind. The cost of Hilton Honors award nights is based on dynamic pricing and can increase at any time without notice. The regular frequency in which Hilton Honors is offering a 100% bonus points promotion also makes it unnecessary to buy points speculatively.
